| Obverse description | The obverse features a stylized map of France populated with silhouettes of notable historical monuments representing diverse architectural styles. Flanking the map on either side are vertical inscriptions, with the national motto LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ arching along the upper portion. The denomination 1 EURO 1/2 appears prominently, while the legend LES MONUMENTS DE FRANCE is inscribed along the lower field. The mint mark, the date 2002, and the RF monogram of the French Republic are also present in the design. |

France's 2002 euro changeover year produced a flood of commemorative silver issues from the Monnaie de Paris, and Mont Saint-Michel was an obvious candidate — the abbey has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 and is among the most visited monuments in Europe. The 1½ euro denomination itself was a Monnaie de Paris invention, having no circulation equivalent anywhere in the eurozone, created specifically to anchor a new commemorative series at a price point above the symbolic €1 but below the heftier €10 issues.
The abbey's founding is traditionally dated to 708 AD, when Bishop Aubert of Avranches reportedly received instructions from the Archangel Michael to build on the tidal island.
