Additional information

Issued as part of France's Sport series ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, this piece was struck at a moment when the Monnaie de Paris was aggressively expanding its collector program — producing themed silver issues in volumes that sometimes outpaced genuine collector demand. France has a legitimate claim to fencing prominence; its épée tradition in particular shaped the modern rules of the sport through FIE governance, much of which was historically centered in Paris.
