Obverse description A richly detailed underwater scene inspired by Jules Verne's novel 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea' dominates the field. The iconic Nautilus submarine is depicted in high relief traversing the upper portion of the coin, surrounded by jellyfish, seaweed, and tropical fish. In the lower field, helmeted divers explore a submerged classical ruin, while a giant octopus and seahorse animate the right portion of the design. The Republican monogram 'RF' (République Française) appears prominently to the left, with the curved legend 'VINGT MILLE LIEUES SOUS LES MERS' arcing along the upper rim.

Reverse description The bearded portrait of Jules Verne is rendered in high relief at the centre of the field, set against a background evoking scientific instruments including a set square and navigational tools to the left, and stylised nautical and astronomical motifs to the right. The dates '1828' and '1905', denoting the author's birth and death years, flank his name 'JULES VERNE' along the upper arc. The denomination '1 1/2 EURO' and the year '2005' appear prominently to the upper right. The inscription 'PRÉCURSEUR DE LA SCIENCE FICTION' runs horizontally across the lower field, with the French national motto 'LIBERTÉ . ÉGALITÉ . FRATERNITÉ' inscribed along the lower rim.
