The Bank of Pei Hai (北海银行) was a Communist-controlled regional bank operating in the Bohai coastal area, established in 1938 during the Sino-Japanese War and formally absorbed into the People's Bank of China at its founding in December 1948. This 1000 Yuan note was issued in the final months of the bank's independent existence, as the PRC monetary consolidation was already underway.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference denotes regional or provisional status — these notes circulated in liberated zone economies running parallel monetary systems well before the Nationalist government's own currency collapsed under hyperinflation. The Pei Hai series is notoriously difficult to authenticate, with wartime-era reproductions and later facsimiles present in the market.
