Obverse description Intaglio portrait of the novelist Natsume Sōseki (born Kinnosuke Natsume) in three-quarter view at right, set within an oval vignette against a multicolour guilloche ground. At centre-left, an elaborate rosette underprint frames the kanji denomination 千円 within a medallion, below which the Bank of Japan's red seal is applied.
