Additional information

This issue commemorates the Trans-Mongolian Railway, the branch line completed in 1956 that connected the Soviet-built Mongolian network southward through Ulaanbaatar to the Chinese border at Zamyn-Üüd, forming the critical land link between Moscow and Beijing during the Cold War. Traffic on the line carried Soviet technical advisors into Mongolia and Chinese goods northward — a route whose diplomatic freight was often as significant as its physical cargo.

Mongolia's commemorative gold program of the mid-1990s was largely export-driven, produced for collector markets abroad as the country navigated its post-Soviet transition to a market economy. Domestic circulation of these pieces was never the intent.
