Reverse description Finely detailed portrait bust of Fidel Castro facing slightly left, depicted in his characteristic military cap adorned with a five-pointed star, and his distinctive full beard. To the upper right of the portrait, the legend 'FIDEL CASTRO' curves along the upper field in Latin script, accompanied by a vertical column of Mongolian script below it. A large five-pointed star appears in the lower right field. The date '2017' is inscribed in small characters at the base of the portrait. Additional information

Mongolia has issued collector coins honoring foreign political figures with some regularity, but the decision to mint a Castro piece in 2017 — the year following his death in November 2016 — places this squarely in the commemorative rush that followed. Mongolia and Cuba maintained warm diplomatic ties through the Soviet-aligned Non-Aligned Movement era, though the connection was never especially deep. At half a gram of four-nines gold, the practical value of the metal barely exceeds the face denomination.
