Kazakhstan's first domestic currency series launched in November 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble at a rate of 1 tenge to 500 rubles — a practical severance from the ruble zone that the newly independent republic had been negotiating against considerable pressure from Moscow. Harrison & Sons, a British security printer with deep Commonwealth credentials, handled the production of the higher denominations, including this 1000 tenge.
The 1994 date reflects issue year rather than printing year; the physical notes were produced ahead of the 1993 introduction and released into circulation as demand required.
