Somaliland's legal status complicates every coin it issues. Unrecognized by any United Nations member state, the Bank of Somaliland operates as a de facto central bank for a self-declared republic that has maintained a functioning government since 1991 — yet none of its currency holds international legal tender status outside its own borders. These dragon issues were produced for the collector market, not circulation, and were distributed through international dealers rather than domestic banking channels.
The 2012 date places this squarely in the Year of the Dragon lunar cycle, one of the highest-demand years in the Chinese collector market.
