| Obverse description | The central device depicts the Coat of Arms of Uganda, featuring a crested crane and a kob antelope as supporters flanking a shield adorned with a traditional drum and the sun, set upon a green mound with the River Nile in the background. A scroll beneath the shield bears the national motto FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY in the exergue. The circular legend BANK OF UGANDA arcs across the upper field, with the date 20 02 split on either side of the arms, and the denomination 1000 SHILLINGS inscribed along the lower rim. The design is rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field, enclosed by a beaded border. |

Uganda issued this coin four years ahead of the 2008 Beijing Games, not in anticipation of London — the London Summer Olympics it references are those of 1948, the so-called Austerity Games held in a city still rationing food and rebuilding from wartime bombing. Uganda was not yet independent in 1948 and sent no team; the commemorative connection is purely commercial, produced for the collector market by a private mint operating under license.
