Uganda issued this coin under a licensing arrangement common among smaller central banks in the 1990s, whereby foreign mints — typically European — produced themed collector pieces bearing the issuing nation's name and currency unit while having no practical connection to Ugandan monetary policy or circulation. The Jungfraujoch, the high saddle between the Mönch and Jungfrau peaks in the Bernese Alps, was reached by rack railway in 1912 and remains the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 meters.
The pairing of a Ugandan denomination with a Swiss Alpine landmark is purely commercial.
