| Reverse description | A left-facing bust of Pope John Paul II is depicted at the microphone, rendered in fine relief as though addressing an audience at UNESCO headquarters. To the left of the composition, the Eiffel Tower of Paris rises prominently in the field, anchoring the scene geographically to France. The legend FRANCE appears along the upper arc flanked by cross ornaments, with UNESCO and the papal visit dates 30.05.-02.06. 1980 inscribed across the field. The lower legend reads JOHN PAUL II - PAPAL VISITS, commemorating his historic pastoral journey to France. |

| Additional information |
Uganda issued this piece as part of a broader wave of commemorative coinage produced for the foreign collector market — a revenue strategy that had little to do with Ugandan monetary policy and everything to do with licensing the papal image ahead of John Paul II's death in April 2005. The coin almost certainly entered production before he died, making it one of several pieces that straddled the line between tribute and anticipatory issue.
