Obverse description The obverse features the central arms of Uganda, comprising a shield supported by a rampant Uganda kob (antelope) to the left and a grey crowned crane to the right, with a drum and the national motto scroll reading FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY at the base. The legend BANK OF UGANDA arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 2005 divided to either side of the shield at mid-field. The denomination 1000 SHILLINGS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The entire design is contained within a beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse depicts the right-facing bust of Pope John Paul II wearing pontifical vestments and mitre, his hands clasped in prayer, occupying the right portion of the field. To the left, the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro is rendered in relief, with the inscription CORCOVADO beneath it. A central cartouche at the base bears the visit dates 30.06.-12.07. flanked by crossed papal keys surmounted by the papal tiara and the visit number 7. The legend JOHN PAUL II - PAPAL VISITS curves along the lower periphery, with 1980 to the right. The country name BRAZIL appears at the top of the field, flanked by cross ornaments forming a decorative border around the inner field.
