Somalia's gold elephant series occupies an unusual niche: issued under the authority of the Central Bank of a state that, for much of the series' run, barely functioned as one. The coins are legal tender in name, but were designed from the outset for the international bullion market, produced under contract by a European mint and distributed almost entirely outside Somalia.
The .9999 fineness places it among the purest of the major bullion series — finer than the Krugerrand, on par with the Canadian Maple Leaf.
