Somalia's elephant coin series, launched in 2002, occupies an odd corner of the numismatic market — the country has had no functioning central bank for most of the series' run, with production contracted entirely to foreign private mints. The 10 oz format debuted as the series expanded to meet collector demand from European and Asian bullion markets, where the elephant design had developed a following independent of any Somali monetary policy.
The .9999 fineness distinguishes these from the earlier issues, which were struck to .999.
