| Reverse description | The reverse features a centrally placed circular coloured appliqué depicting an African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) facing the viewer in a savannah landscape, rendered in naturalistic colour against a golden-yellow background. The elephant is shown in full frontal view with prominent tusks and raised head, conveying a sense of power and presence. The upper legend 'PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED WILDLIFE' arcs around the outer border of the coin in raised lettering. The word 'AFRICA' is inscribed along the lower rim, flanked on either side by a five-pointed star. The coloured central insert is framed by a raised border separating it from the milled outer ring. |

| Additional information |
Uganda's 1996 coinage program included several wildlife-themed issues aimed squarely at the collector market rather than domestic circulation — a strategy the Bank of Uganda leaned into heavily during the 1990s as hard currency reserves remained tight following decades of post-Amin economic contraction.
KM#55 turns up almost exclusively in uncirculated condition, which tells you everything about its intended audience.
