Additional information

Uganda's issuance of this piece had nothing to do with any particular connection between Einstein and East Africa — it belongs squarely to the commemorative coin programs that proliferated through small-nation mints in the late 1990s, when the Bank of Uganda, like dozens of other sovereign issuers, licensed its authority to produce silver collectibles with no domestic circulation intent whatsoever. These programs were administered almost entirely by European coin marketing firms, with the issuing country receiving a licensing fee.

Einstein died in Princeton in 1955, having renounced his German citizenship in 1933 upon Hitler's rise to power.
