This is a novelty piece issued by Uganda in 1999 anticipating the euro's introduction — the embedded euro cent is a genuine circulation coin struck by the Belgian mint, affixed to the Ugandan host coin as part of the design. Uganda had no monetary relationship with the eurozone; the issue was squarely aimed at the collector market, exploiting the appetite for euro-preview material in the years before the single currency entered circulation in January 2002.
