Nepal designated 2011 as Visit Nepal Year, part of a recurring tourism promotion campaign the government had run since 1998 with mixed results — the 2011 edition was complicated by lingering political instability following the decade-long Maoist insurgency that had officially ended only in 2006. The Nepal Rastra Bank issued commemorative silver coinage to mark the campaign, a practice that generates foreign collector revenue as much as it celebrates the occasion itself.
