Satyamohan Joshi, honored on this issue, was one of Nepal's most remarkable cultural scholars — a linguist, folklorist, and authority on Newari language and classical Nepali literature who lived to 100 years old, born in 1919. Nepal Rastra Bank has a consistent practice of issuing commemorative silver pieces honoring living national figures of exceptional longevity and cultural contribution, and Joshi, still active in his research well into his late nineties, was an obvious candidate.
