Issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sri Lanka's Employees' Provident Fund, established in 1958 under the Employees' Provident Fund Act — one of the largest mandatory retirement savings schemes in South Asia, eventually accumulating assets worth a substantial fraction of the country's GDP. The nickel-plated steel composition, rather than a precious or cupro-nickel alloy, reflects the commemorative-but-affordable approach the Central Bank adopted for this series.
