Issued to mark the 20th anniversary of Mauritian independence, this coin was produced at the Royal Mint in a limited bullion format aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. The dodo — extinct since the late 17th century following Dutch settlement of the island — has served as Mauritius's most recognizable national symbol precisely because its disappearance is so directly tied to human arrival. No living person has ever seen one.
The .917 fineness places this coin in the traditional 22-karat crown gold standard, the same alloy used for Sovereigns and Krugerrands.
