Nikolaevsk-on-Amur in 1920 was one of the most isolated and violent theaters of the Russian Civil War. The town's branch of the State Bank issued emergency notes while the settlement itself was in the hands of partisan forces under Yakov Tryapitsyn — who, within months, would order the massacre of the town's remaining population and burn it to the ground before retreating. Notes from this issuance survived only because they left the region before the destruction.
Few Russian Civil War provincial issues carry a more specific and verifiable catastrophe behind them.
