The Barnaul Branch of the State Bank operated during one of the most chaotic monetary periods in Siberian history — the civil war interval between Kolchak's collapsing White government and Bolshevik consolidation of the region. Local branches were effectively printing on their own authority by 1920, with little coordination between cities. Barnaul, Tomsk, Omsk, and others each produced distinctly localized issues that circulated in parallel with, and often in competition against, one another.

Pick S1268A is among the rarer Barnaul locals. The collapse of White forces in late 1919 severely disrupted distribution, meaning many high-denomination notes from this period never reached full circulation before being rendered worthless by Bolshevik monetary reform.
