Reverse description Central vignette of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, set within a fine guilloche underprint in pale green and ochre tones. The iconic octagonal shrine with its golden dome is rendered in intaglio against a stylised skyline. Bilingual inscriptions in Persian and English frame the design, with the denomination stated in both numerals and words along the lower border.

Comments

The label "Masjid al-Aqsa" printed on early issues of this note is a documented misidentification — the image clearly depicts the Dome of the Rock (Qubbat al-Sakhra), a distinct structure some 200 meters away on the Temple Mount. The error was quietly dropped on later printings rather than formally corrected. Thomas De La Rue continued producing the series throughout, an arrangement that survived the post-revolutionary period despite the political awkwardness of Iran's state banknotes being printed in London well into the 1990s.

The Fahmideh watermark variants commemorate Mohammad Hossein Fahmideh, a 13-year-old who died during the Iran-Iraq War and was elevated to martyrdom status by Khomeini — his image entering the currency stock as a deliberate ideological marker.
