João V came to the Portuguese throne in 1706 inheriting the full torrent of Brazilian gold that would define his reign — the Minas Gerais rush was barely a decade old and the Rio de Janeiro mint had only recently been established to process metal before it could be smuggled out by contraband networks operating through Buenos Aires. The 1000 réis denomination struck there during this period was part of an emergency coinage infrastructure, not a planned monetary system; the crown was essentially building a mint while simultaneously trying to control a gold rush it had not anticipated.
