Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms at center, featuring the escutcheon of Portugal with five bezants arranged in a cross pattern on the inescutcheon, surrounded by the traditional bordure of castles, all surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. The denomination '1000' appears in the left field alongside the shield. The circular legend reads IOANNES.V.D.G.PORT.ET.ALG.REX, identifying João V as King of Portugal and the Algarves by the Grace of God, rendered in neat Latin letters distributed around the periphery. The design is executed in a bold, high-relief baroque style characteristic of early eighteenth-century Portuguese colonial coinage. The entire device is contained within a reeded border.
