Obverse description The crowned Portuguese royal arms, comprising the quartered escutcheon with the five quinas and the bordure of castles surmounted by a royal crown, occupies the central field. The denomination numeral '1000' appears to the left of the shield, flanked by four small floral ornaments at the cardinal points. The circular legend, read clockwise from the upper right, runs along the coin's periphery in raised Latin letters separated by dots.
