| Reverse description | Central device consists of the Portuguese royal shield of arms, displaying the five quinas (escutcheons) arranged in a cross pattern with castles on the bordure, all within a decorative frame. A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield, reading fragments of PORTVGALIE and the royal title of Sebastião I, consistent with the original 500 Réis issue. The flan shows characteristic irregular edges and surface texture associated with hand-hammered Portuguese gold coinage of the late 16th century. The overall strike is bold though slightly off-center, as typical for this series. |
