| Obverse description | Central medallion depicts a laureate allegorical bust of Liberty facing right, with a ribbon-tied wreath of leaves adorning her hair and a flowing scroll bearing the legend LIBERTAS arching above her effigy. Flanking the central medallion in the surrounding field are two vignettes symbolising the progress of Brazil: a steamship under sail to the left and a steam locomotive to the right, both set against a lightly rendered landscape. Agricultural implements, including a scythe and a branch, appear in the lower field below the central medallion. The circular peripheral legend REPÚBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL runs along the outer rim, separated from the field by a toothed inner border and an outer reeded edge. |
