Reverse description The coat of arms of the House of Braganza occupies the central field, depicted as a quartered shield charged with the Portuguese quinas (five escutcheons each bearing five bezants) and castle motifs, supported by elaborate mantling and surmounted by a royal crown. The denominational legend '1000 REIS' is inscribed in large characters flanking the arms, with '1000' to the left and 'REIS' to the right, curving with the coin's rim. The overall design is executed in bold, deeply struck relief typical of Brazilian commemorative coinage of the early Republican period.

Additional information

Brazil's 1932 commemorative program marked four centuries since the Portuguese crown formally divided the coastline into hereditary captaincies and distributed them to donatários — the administrative experiment that constituted organized colonization. The coin was struck the same year São Paulo state launched the Constitutionalist Revolution against Getúlio Vargas, a civil war that killed thousands and ended in federal military victory by October.
