Alderney has leveraged its Crown Dependency status to issue commemorative coinage well outside the constraints of UK monetary policy since the 1990s, and pieces like this sit at the extreme end of that practice — large-format gold issues with face values that bear no relationship to circulation reality. Charles turned 60 in November 2008, the same month Lehman Brothers' collapse was still convulsing global credit markets, which makes the timing of a kilogram-plus gold vanity piece quietly ironic.
