| Reverse description | A faithful and monumental reproduction in very high relief of Benedetto Pistrucci's celebrated Waterloo Medal design, conceived by the artist in 1819 and never previously struck to full completion in his lifetime. The central composition presents Nike, goddess of Victory, driving the thunderbolt-charged chariot of Zeus, flanked by the equestrian figures of the Duke of Wellington and Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher. The outer border is populated by chthonic giants with serpentine lower limbs drawn from classical mythology, symbolising the defeated forces of Napoleon. The sole inscription PISTRUCCI appears in the field, attributing the design to its original creator. The entire composition is rendered with exceptional sculptural depth and fine surface detail, befitting this landmark proof striking. |
