Obverse description Central depiction of the façade of the Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral (São Paulo), rendered in fine relief against a mirror-polished field. The iconic baroque stonework is shown in precise architectural detail, with tiered pilasters and carved panels. Twelve five-pointed stars are arranged in a ring around the central motif, evoking the border of the European Communities flag. The legend MACAU arcs across the upper field in widely spaced Latin letters, while the date 1996 appears along the lower field.

Additional information

The 1996 issue marks the Year of the Rat, first in the twelve-year lunar cycle — a recurrence that carries particular commercial weight in the collectibles market, as rat-year pieces consistently attract stronger demand than mid-cycle issues. Macao's gold lunar series was positioned partly to capture Hong Kong spillover interest ahead of the 1997 handover, a period when regional appetite for tangible, portable assets was running unusually high.
