Additional information

Macau's Lunar New Year gold series was produced under the monetary authority of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino's successor institutions during the final years before gaming liberalization transformed the territory's economy entirely. The 2004 issue marks the Year of the Monkey — the ninth animal in the twelve-year cycle — released while Macau was still finding its footing as a Special Administrative Region under Chinese sovereignty, a status it had held for only five years following the 1999 handover from Portugal.

KM#133 corresponds to the higher-denomination gold strike in that year's issue, at a fineness consistent with 22-karat production.
