Additional information

Yugoslavia issued this piece in 1996 while the country was in its final political convulsions — the Federal Republic reduced to Serbia and Montenegro, under UN sanctions that had only partially lifted the year before. Commemorative gold was one of the few hard-currency instruments the Belgrade government could still credibly produce and sell abroad.

Tesla was born in Smiljan in 1856, in what is now Croatia — a biographical fact that made his use on Yugoslav coinage increasingly freighted as the federation dissolved around Serbian and Croatian territorial conflict.
