Bielefeld's silk Notgeld series is among the most technically unusual emergency currency produced during the German inflation crisis. The Stadtsparkasse commissioned E. Gundlach — a local printing and textile firm — to produce notes on actual woven silk fabric, a choice driven partly by the shortage of quality paper stock in 1922 and partly by civic pride; Bielefeld had long been a center of the linen and textile trade in Westphalia.

Silk examples survive in better condition than their linen counterparts from the same issuer, as the material resists the edge fraying that plagues the linen pieces. Schreiber's design credit appears in the printing — uncommon for municipal emergency issues of this period.
