Obverse description Printed in green on white paper, the obverse centres on a large numeral '1000' within a guilloche-bordered vignette, flanked by an allegorical group of two standing figures — a helmeted warrior and a female figure — set against a harbour and landscape background. The denomination 'EIN TAUSEND MARK' and issuing authority 'DARLEHNSKASSE OST' appear in a cartouche below the central vignette, with the date 'KOWNO, DEN 4. APRIL 1918' and a facsimile signature beneath. The word 'DARLEHNSKASSENSCHEIN' runs across the top, with '1000 MARK' repeated at all four corners against decorative side panels with oval rosette ornaments.

The Darlehnskasse Ost was a German military loan office established in occupied Eastern territories during the First World War, issuing its own currency parallel to — but separate from — the Reichsmark. The 1000 Mark denomination was the highest in the series, intended primarily for large transactions within the occupation zone rather than everyday use by the local population.

These notes lost all validity with Germany's military collapse in late 1918. The occupied territories they served — stretching across what is now Poland, Lithuania, and Belarus — were almost immediately reorganized under new national currencies, leaving Darlehnskasse Ost paper worthless within months of printing.
