Nördlingen's municipal council issued this 1000 Mark note in 1923 as notgeld — emergency money produced locally when hyperinflation rendered Reichsbank supply utterly inadequate for daily commerce. By mid-1923, the Reichsmark was losing value faster than notes could be printed and distributed through official channels, forcing hundreds of German municipalities to fill the gap themselves.
Nördlingen had its own printing infrastructure, which is why this note was produced locally rather than contracted to one of the major specialist printers handling notgeld for larger cities. The city sits within a 14-million-year-old meteorite crater — the Nördlinger Ries — a geological fact that had no bearing on its monetary crisis but lends the issuer an unusual distinction among notgeld authorities.
