Geldern is a small town in the Lower Rhine, and its district administration — like hundreds of German municipal and county bodies — was forced into emergency currency production as hyperinflation made Reichsbank notes functionally useless faster than they could be printed. This particular denomination, 1,000 Mark, was already a laughably small sum by mid-1923; Kreis Geldern almost certainly issued higher multiples within months, if not weeks, of this note's appearance.
Notgeld at the Kreis level was rarely printed to the standards of city issues. District administrations typically contracted with local or regional print shops rather than specialist security printers, and quality control was inconsistent. Paper stock and ink on these issues can vary considerably even within the same print run.
