Saparmurat Niyazov — who awarded himself the title Türkmenbaşy, meaning "Leader of all Turkmens" — commissioned an extensive series of commemorative silver issues during the final years of his rule, many bearing his own likeness and name as issuing authority rather than the state alone. He died in December 2006, making this among the last coins struck under his personal cult of personality before his successor Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow systematically dismantled much of the Türkmenbaşy iconography from public life.
