Saparmurat Niyazov — who awarded himself the title Türkmenbaşy, "Leader of all Turkmen" — died in December 2006, making this among the final issues produced under his direct cult of personality. His administration had renamed months of the year after himself and his mother, built a gold-plated rotating statue of himself in Ashgabat, and banned opera, gold teeth, and lip-syncing by presidential decree. The Central Bank operated essentially as an instrument of his personal mythology rather than an independent monetary authority.
Successor Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow rapidly dismantled much of the Türkmenbaşy iconography after taking power, which effectively ended this coin type's institutional backing within months of issue.
