Additional information

Gurbansoltan eje was the mother of Saparmurat Niyazov — Turkmenbashi — whose personality cult shaped every institution of post-Soviet Turkmenistan. She died in the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake, one of the deadliest seismic events in Soviet history, officially killing 10,000 though later estimates run as high as 176,000. Niyazov, then eight years old, survived. He named a month of the year after her.

This coin was issued the same year the renaming of months was formalized in the revised Ruhnama calendar.
