| Obverse description | The three towers of San Marino — Guaita, Cesta, and Montale — rising from the rocky summit of Mount Titano, each surmounted by an ostrich feather plume, rendered in a bold sculptural style. The denomination 'L. 1000' appears in the lower field, flanked by a sprig of laurel and wheat, with the date '1980' below. The circular legend 'REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO' arcs around the upper portion of the field. A mint mark appears to the right of the central device. |

| Additional information |
San Marino issued this coin to mark the 1500th anniversary of the founding of the Benedictine Order — a milestone Benedict himself never witnessed, having died around 547 AD before monasticism cohered into the formal Rule that would govern Western religious life for centuries. The small republic maintains a tradition of silver commemoratives tied to Catholic anniversaries, which accounts for the frequency with which these issues appear on the market.
KM#112 was struck in modest quantities for collector sales rather than general circulation, leaving most examples in original mint state.
