Obverse description The Papal coat of arms of Pope John Paul II occupies the central field, featuring a quartered shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The engraver's signature N. MORELLI appears in the lower right field. The circular legend CITTA' DEL VATICANO arcs along the upper rim, while the denomination L. 1000 is displayed prominently in large numerals along the lower portion of the field. A.V MCMLXXXIII arcs along the upper rim, identifying the pontiff by his regnal name, his title of Pontifex Maximus, the pontifical year, and the Gregorian date in Roman numerals.
