San Marino's 2001 bimetallic lire issues were struck in the final weeks before the euro replaced the lira across the Italian monetary zone on January 1, 2002. The republic had produced its own lire coinage under agreement with Italy since 1972, and this 1000 lire piece was among the last denominations struck before that arrangement became permanently obsolete. Collectors anticipated the transition aggressively, and most of these late-series pieces were absorbed directly into hoards rather than circulation.
