The denomination '1000' appears in large numerals at the center, with 'ЛЕВА' inscribed below, and the date '1995' at the lower portion of the field. The wreath is tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The circular legend 'РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ' arcs across the upper portion of the coin in Cyrillic script. |

The FAO coin program, which Bulgaria participated in across several decades, was conceived to fund and publicize United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization initiatives globally. This 1995 issue arrived as Bulgaria was deep in a post-communist economic unraveling that would peak in the catastrophic hyperinflation of 1996–97, when the lev lost the overwhelming majority of its value and the government collapsed. A commemorative struck at face value of 1,000 leva was, within two years of minting, worth a fraction of a single U.S. cent.
