| Obverse description | At center, the Romanian Coat of Arms is flanked by heraldic and graphic elements commemorating the 1848 Revolution, including a Frisian helmet and two crossed tricolor flags. Issued to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the December 1989 uprising that toppled Nicolae Ceaușescu, this piece was struck just years after Romania emerged from one of Eastern Europe's most violent communist collapses — Ceaușescu and his wife Elena were executed by firing squad on Christmas Day, 1989, following a summary trial that lasted less than two hours.
