Issued as part of Romania's ongoing commemorative program marking the Dacian Wars, this coin references Trajan's first campaign of 101–102 AD, which ended with Decebalus accepting Roman terms — a peace the Dacian king almost immediately began violating. The war's outcome was ultimately incomplete, necessitating a second campaign just four years later that would end in the destruction of Sarmizegetusa and Dacia's absorption as a Roman province.
The .999 fine gold standard places it among the purer issues in Romania's commemorative output of the period.
