| Reverse description | The reverse commemorates the sinking of the RMS Titanic, presenting a split compositional design. To the left, a detailed relief depiction of the RMS Titanic under full sail at sea occupies approximately half the field, with rendered waves at the vessel's bow and a flag flying from the mast. To the right, a circular color insert depicts the stricken liner pitching bow-upward as she sinks beneath blue-toned waters, evoking the moment of the disaster. The name TITANIC arcs prominently along the upper legend in bold letters, while the lower border inscription records the precise date and time of the sinking: APRIL 15 2.20 a.m. 1912. Zambia's commemorative program in the late 1990s was frankly opportunistic, timed to the global Titanic fever that followed James Cameron's December 1997 film rather than any historical connection between Zambia and the 1912 disaster. The "2nd obverse" designation reflects a mid-series die change on these issues — the Bank of Zambia produced multiple Titanic-themed pieces simultaneously, and obverse variants exist within the same year of issue.
