Reverse description A sensitively rendered portrait scene depicts Princess Diana, shown from the bust upward, leaning tenderly toward a young child whom she embraces; both figures hold a bouquet of flowers in the lower field. The composition is presented in high relief against a plain field. The curved legend 'IN MEMORY OF PRINCESS DIANA' arcs along the upper periphery, with the commemorative date '31 AUGUST 1998' inscribed below it.

Additional information

Issued the year following Diana's death in August 1997, this is one of dozens of commemorative pieces struck by mints worldwide capitalizing on the wave of memorial demand. Zambia's Bank issued several Diana-themed pieces across different denominations in this period, most produced by the Pobjoy Mint in Surrey. The 1000 Kwacha denomination was largely notional — by 1998, Zambian inflation had rendered the face value functionally meaningless against the actual cost of production.
